Since 1946, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) has been a resource for our community and a shelter for homeless animals. Through adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education, community service and outreach, the AWLA plays a key role in promoting responsible pet care across Northern Virginia. The AWLA has worked with the City of Alexandria to provide animal care, control, protection and sheltering services since 1989. We operate the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to us from within the jurisdiction. We have made a commitment to help animals in need with the help of our amazing and animal-loving community. We care for more than 2,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and chinchillas. Our specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.

With seven cats and a dog at home, it would be safe to assume that James Ketola is quite an animal lover. His love of animals and interest in photography merged when he began volunteering at the Prince George’s County Animal Shelter. After more than 1500 new pup portraits and several hundred person-pup interaction photos, James decided to make his services commercially available. His specialty is working with natural light at one of the many beautiful parks and trails in the area. Whether it be the warmth of golden hour or the mystique of a shady forest, he is ready to capture the essence of your furry companion. Through his volunteer activities, James has developed a great deal of admiration for the hard work that the Rescues put in to bring pups into their furever homes, in addition to the tireless efforts the Shelter staff puts into feeding, socializing, and cleaning the animals. Happy Paws Photography is an effort to support these fantastic individuals, and 10% of every sale goes directly to local Rescues; the remainder goes to the resources required to provide free services to the local shelters and Rescues. Happy Paws Photography also aims to foster and grow a community around values of sustainability, equity, and inclusion by partnering with other small businesses that share these values.

I'm Heather, the owner of Leia's Treats and I'm so excited you are here! Building this business has been a dream of mine since I first started making pup treats in 2012 and I have each of you to thank. Because of yall, I've been able to create the work life balance that I've always wanted but wasn't able to have when I worked full-time. I am so incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support of my family, friends, and customers to have this opportunity to work from home to be with my family when they need me and to of course, spoil your pups!
Our journey began with a simple yet profound love for our furry companions and a commitment to their well-being. As avid dog-lovers, we discovered the alarming number of preservatives and artificial additives lurking in the treats we were feeding our pets. Determined to provide them with a healthier and tastier alternative, we embarked on a mission to create homemade recipes using natural ingredients. Driven by a deep passion for our pets' well-being, we dedicated ourselves to formulating the most nutritious and heart-healthy treats. We knew that every ingredient mattered, and we wanted to ensure that each one was carefully selected for its nutritional value and sourced from the freshest and highest quality options available. Driven by this newfound awareness, we set out to create a line of dog treats that would embody our values of purity and quality. We were determined to craft treats made from only the finest, all-natural ingredients, free from artificial additives, preservatives, and fillers. Our goal was clear: to provide a product that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of discerning pet owners who want the very best for their furry friends. Our story is not just about creating treats; it’s about fostering a community of pet owners who share our dedication to natural, wholesome care. We believe that every dog deserves a treat that supports their health, happiness, and vitality. We invite you to be a part of our story and experience the difference that all-natural treats can make.

With a location in historic Old Town Alexandria, Mount Purrnon celebrates early U.S. history! The café has local reference guides, maps, and books for visitors or locals to take advantage of this great area. There is also free Wi-Fi and day/monthly passes for those who wish to telework from the cat café! Marlees Misfits began in summer 2024 as a nonprofit entity to help us better serve our resident adoptable cats. Our focus will be on care for seniors, cats with special needs, and medical emergencies. We provide housing and care for cats from high-risk shelters, owner surrenders, and overcrowded cat rescues. We provide behavior and medical support for cats deemed “less adoptable” due to age, illness, or injury. Funds raised are used to provide supplies and vet care for cats housed at Mount Purrnon Cat Café. Other funds are used to help cats at other rescues and education and outreach.

Dog training with kindness. Become the Pack Leader to get rid of the stress. Being a Pack Leader doesn’t mean you have to be forceful and demanding, or scold the dog to get him to listen. Pack Leaders are confident, calm, patient and understanding. They have the skills to manage their own energy and recognize how their energy influences their dog’s behavior. If you won’t be the Pack Leader, your dog will. To your dog, being part of a pack is a natural way to live. She relies on her Pack Leader for guidance and instinctively mirrors the Pack Leader’s energy. If the Pack Leader’s energy is weak, out of balance, or missing, your dog will take that role herself and exhibit undesirable behavior. Your dog wants a Pack Leader and wants to please you. At Paw Mind Body, we can teach you to be the Pack Leader your dog needs. Our training method is designed to take away the stress that your dog is carrying so you can have a happy, well-adjusted dog. No e-collars or any other harsh methods are used in Paw Mind Body training.
Our mission is simple: to empower dog owners with the knowledge and skills they need to build lasting, positive relationships with their pets. We understand that every dog is unique, and our training methods are tailored to suit individual needs, personalities, and learning styles. Customized plans help dogs, and their humans live happier lives together! Grounded in structure, love, and guidance, we provide real results for dogs of all ages, breeds, and temperaments through expert behavioral coaching.
Pawsh Dog Wash exists for the sole purpose of giving your pet the best hygienic care we can through means that are best suited for them. We do not believe in one single way to handle every pet. Some dogs require slow and steady during their visit while others need a more firm tone and hand. No two dogs were created equal and we understand that. At Pawsh we do not force things on your dog that we do not find necessary. Some places will try to sell Blueberry Facials, mud baths and specialized treatments- we don’t believe in that, and we don’t believe your pet should tolerate more than necessary for their health and hygiene. Pawsh is here for your pet, not your money.
My name is Adriana. I moved to the United States from Australia in 2018 and began volunteering in Animal Rescue. It wasn't long before I had foster failed and my life revolved around taking care of my new dog and helping other adopters find their perfect match. Adopting a rescue dog has not only made me a better, stronger and more patient person it has taught me so much about animal behavior and has helped me truly find my passion - working with animals. In 2022 I began dog walking to bring in an extra stream of income to help with my dogs ever growing medical bills. This casual dog walking evolved into me leaving my unfulfilling job and taking care of pets fulltime. Animal care is my absolute passion and my goal is to make your pet feel at home so you can relax and take a break from dog parent duties.
PAL’s mission is to use the power of the human-animal bond to comfort the lonely, ease the pain of the sick, and enrich people’s lives.

I grew up in Malaysia & Singapore. I had always loved art as a child and often had my paintings hung on the display board at my school as exemplary art. The biggest motivation that led me to where I am today is when I received an award as the best artist during my final year in high school. During my leisure time as I grew older, I would paint, and most of my paintings included replications of pictures. One day, a dear friend’s dog, Lola (a sweet, well-mannered and loyal companion), passed away. So, I decided to paint a portrait of her as a way to capture my fond memory of her. I immediately fell in love with the entire process of painting Lola, especially her eyes. I became obsessed with ensuring that her portrait would depict the unique and beloved soul she was. After many compliments from customers and friends about my pet portrait paintings, I finally decided to pull the plug from years of working as a graphic artist and preschool teacher, to solely focus on painting pet portraits, as well as traveling. When I paint, I’m engaged and engrossed in every detail of my work. What is most important to me is seeing the pleased faces of my customers along with fulfilling my own expectations of my work.
During his years working in the veterinary emergency room, Dr. Nir Ben-Ari noticed something. Most of the cases he treated were urgent – but they weren’t life-threatening. Nir faced an important question: why crowd emergency hospitals with cases that could be safely managed in a more comfortable outpatient setting? And so, PetMedic was born. Since then, Nir has been joined by a team of experienced doctors and technicians who help him fill the void in extended day, weekend, and holiday care. And we’re just getting started.

About Maribeth: I came by my love of animals and intuition from my family. Love of Animals: I grew up with cats and regularly took care of my neighbor’s dog, Bootsie, a standard poodle. I considered my cats and Bootsie family. As a kid, I spent time outdoors looking for critters in a nearby stream when I wasn’t reading. Intuition runs in my family, especially on my Dad’s side. I grew up with incredible stories of encounters with deceased family members and other beings from my Dad and my Grandmother. First spiritual experience: I had a spiritual experience at 13 years old when I asked God if God existed. I received an incredible response from a loving, intelligent presence. I was overwhelmed and grateful. Still am. This experience happened in the woods; that’s where the name, Sacred Grove originates. Off course: Working on my bachelor’s degree in pre-med, I was forced to do live experiments on mice and turtles. As an empath, I felt the pain and terror of the animals, but had to push the feelings down to complete the course. But the horror stuck with me and I support many animal charities as a result. “C-” dog parenting” After graduating, I became a Navy officer and was stationed in Puerto Rico. By that time, I drank pretty heavily. The chaplain noticed and gave me a book on sobriety — and a street puppy, Pee Wee. Unluckily, no light bulb went off – I didn’t “get” that the Chaplain hoped this sweet dog would change my behavior. So my dog parenting skills were at best, a C-. I wasn’t cruel, but I was neglectful. I felt a lot of guilt and remorse in later years. Lucky for Pee Wee, my parents took her when I received orders to Japan. God has a sense of humor and sent me to a training center where I taught sailors about responsible drinking. Finally, the light bulb turned on – I’ve been sober ever since. My dogs start communicating telepathically: When I became a Reiki Master, my deceased dogs started communicating with me. I was shocked! Eddy comforts me: Eddy transitioned a day before I had to leave for a business trip, leaving me devastated. As I sat in the aisle seat of the airplane, I felt Eddy’s presence in the aisle and even petted her. Eddy stayed with me the first night in the hotel to make sure I was able to support the meeting. Timmie visits: Later, Timmie, who also passed, visited me at home. I saw him out of the corner of my eye. He was a full body apparition, grinning to communicate that he was OK, he was happy and he loved me! I yelled, “Timmie!”, turned to look at him and he was gone. I thought, “That was cool,” and went back to making dinner. Mitsubishi tells me off: Mitsubishi had seen me use Reiki healing on Eddy before she died. It did not keep Eddy on the planet, but it eased her transition. Later, I started doing energy healing on Mitsubishi while we sat on the couch. Mitsubishi looked into my eyes and I thought, “If Mitsubishi could talk, he just said, ‘Don’t try that shit on me; it killed Eddy!’” To emphasize his point, Mitsu jumped off the couch. I still wasn’t getting it! I hadn’t heard of animal communicators at that time. Tibor finally gets through: I finally understood that animal communication was worth pursuing when Tibor came into my life. He was a rescue dog, with a broken tooth, scars and some aggression issues based on fear, yet he was a really nice guy. Disturbing visions: Every time I sat next to Tibor, I saw a picture of a man wearing this huge protective suit with a German Shepherd grabbing his arm. Tibor was sharing it with me, I soon realized – there was no other explanation. I thought, “I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’ve got to find out.” A friend told me about animal communicators. So I took animal communication courses to be able to communicate at will. “Soul” purpose revealed: Dogs brought out my “soul purpose.” Now I work with animals to help them become better family members through intuitive communication, medical intuition, and energy healing. I help improve behavioral issues, explain changes in the family routine and help animals move gracefully through end-of-life transition.

Hi, I'm Amalea! Originally from the south, I moved to the DMV to get a Master's in Public Policy at UMD (go Terps!). After 15 years in the nonprofit sector, I decided to pursue my passion for baking and opened Sugarcoated Bakery LLC in Feb. 2020 as a home-based business in Alexandria, VA. Since then, I've grown my offerings from custom cakes and decorated sugar cookies to include everyday treats like s'mores bars, whoopie pies, and my gourmet cookie line. I also taught myself about chocolate, so I could expand into offering hot cocoa bombs, chocolate breakables, and chocolate covered treats like pretzels and Oreos. In 2021, I started partnering with other local Alexandria businesses like Lost Boy Cider and Boxwood to offer group cookie decorating classes. I also teach private classes, which are great for corporate holiday parties and kids birthdays. In 2023, I made my biggest investment yet in the bakery and purchased a direct to food printer. This has allowed me to make gorgeous - and delicious - logo cookies for businesses such as Amazon, Ting, Lost Boy Cider, Eye2Eye, the Del Ray Business Association, Soma Sou, and others. In 2024, I'm making my next big step and renovating a property to set up a commercial, inspected kitchen. That's right, your favorite home-based bakery will be able to wholesale, ship, and sell at large events like festivals! I hope to bake for you soon!
