*Ferrets are fun, curious, and full of energy. In the Ferret Education Hub, you’ll find expert tips on their dietary needs, litter training, enrichment, and health essentials. Whether you're new to ferrets or an experienced ferret parent, this is the place to start.

Hair loss is a common health concern in pet ferrets and the location and pattern of the hair loss can vary depending on the underlying cause.

Hormonal imbalances are a frequent cause and usually result in hair loss that begins at the tail or rump and gradually moves up the back and sides toward the head. External parasites, such as mites or fleas, can also lead to hair loss, often in areas the ferret can scratch (like the neck and shoulders) or chew (such as the rump or sides). Infections tend to cause small, localized patches of hair loss, while nutritional deficiencies may result in a brittle coat and more generalized thinning.

Since ferrets require a high protein and high fat diet, inadequate nutrition can lead to poor coat quality and fur loss as well. Zinc deficiency is another contributing factor. Fortunately, many of these issues can be treated or prevented with proper care and a high quality ferret diet.

Chewy editorial team shares guidance on six of the most common causes of hair loss in ferrets, helping you recognize the signs early and provide the care your ferret needs to stay healthy and happy.
