Massachusetts’s Bill S.2189, signed into law in 2024 and effective January 1, 2025, bans the use of elephants, big cats, primates, bears, and giraffes in traveling acts such as circuses, fairs, and carnivals, making Massachusetts the 6th state to enact such protections. This landmark legislation reflects strong public demand to end the exploitation of wild animals for entertainment, citing overwhelming evidence of cruelty, neglect, and confinement inherent in these industries.

While exceptions remain for accredited facilities, film production, and domestic animals, the bill underscores a nationwide and global shift toward humane treatment, following the momentum of similar laws in states like New Jersey, California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Maryland.

By addressing the inherent dangers to both animals and public safety, Massachusetts reaffirms its role as a leader in protecting vulnerable beings and paving the way for broader protections across the country.

*At Whiskers, Paws and Love®, we wholeheartedly celebrate this long overdue step forward for animals. We believe that no creature should be forced to suffer for the sake of human amusement, and this law brings hope and healing to countless animals who deserve lives free of fear and exploitation. With deep gratitude, we stand united with legislators, advocates, and communities in embracing compassion as the foundation of a more humane future.
