Lizards make excellent pets for both children and adults - even for those new to reptile care. Like any pet, it is very important to understand their unique daily needs to help them live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Many lizards, such as bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and crested geckos, enjoy gentle handling, but it is essential to wash your hands beforehand and avoid picking them up around feeding times, as they may mistake your fingers for food.

If your lizard appears unwell, skip the handling and schedule a visit with a reptile savvy veterinarian. Lifespans vary widely by species – some can live 15–20 years, while others may only live up to five years. Most pet lizards range in size from 5 to 24 inches and can display fascinating behaviors, including wall climbing (thanks to sticky feet), tail regeneration, skin shedding, and even “push-up” communication using their front limbs.

When it comes to diet, lizards fall into three broad categories: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. However, each species has more specific nutritional needs within those categories. While a few species, like crested geckos, can thrive on complete commercial diets, most require carefully prepared meals to meet their nutritional requirements.

Some lizards may also have unique anatomical traits, like the parietal “third” eye, which is sensitive to light.

Given the wide diversity of lizard species and their varying care requirements, it is crucial to research your pet’s specific needs and consult a veterinarian for guidance. To support new and experienced reptile keepers alike, Chewy editorial team collaborated with veterinary experts to create a thorough guide covering all aspects of lizard care - from habitat setup and nutrition to health monitoring - offering a reliable resource for successful and enriching lizard ownership.
