“The surgeries you’ve funded humanely and efficiently prevent suffering before it starts. Together, we are protecting public health and animal lives!”
For years, homeless dogs and cats in Mongolia suffered unimaginable cruelty - poisoned, shot, and abandoned simply for having no home - but thanks to the support of In Defense of Animals and partners like Lucky Paws, mass killings have ended, and humane spay and neuter programs are proving to be a permanent, effective alternative.
Beginning this spring, veterinary teams traveled to Darkhan City to implement a pilot program, sterilizing 50 dogs and 30 cats, preventing tens of thousands of future births, raising awareness among citizens about responsible guardianship, and establishing critical collaboration with local government, even in harsh winter conditions.
This pilot demonstrates that community-based sterilization works, protects public health in alignment with the World Health Organization’s “Zero by 30” goal, and sets an example for nations struggling with inhumane catch and kill practices.
However, with U.S. government funding withdrawn, continued efforts in Bayankhongor Province and beyond depend on ongoing support to fund veterinary teams, provide safe anesthesia and sterile equipment, and educate citizens under Mongolia’s new Pet Law, ensuring the safety and welfare of countless animals.
*Whiskers, Paws and Love® wholeheartedly supports these lifesaving efforts and stands with the dedicated teams working tirelessly to protect animals in Mongolia. We deeply believe that humane, preventative care is not only the most compassionate approach but also the most effective way to prevent suffering and save countless lives.
We sincerely hope the U.S. government will reconsider and reinstate its funding, and that people and organizations around the world will join in donating, sponsoring, and advocating for this critical pilot program, helping to secure a brighter, safer future for Mongolia’s animals.
