On May 28, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis took a crucial step forward for animal welfare by signing two landmark laws in Florida - Trooper’s Law and Dexter’s Law - both of which are designed to fight animal cruelty and offer stronger protections for our beloved companions.
Trooper’s Law: named in honor of a courageous dog rescued during Hurricane Milton, now makes it a third degree felony to abandon or improperly restrain a dog during natural disasters or evacuations. It also establishes penalties for neglecting animals confined in unsafe conditions.
Dexter’s Law: inspired by the heartbreaking story of a shelter dog tragically killed soon after adoption, increases penalties for aggravated animal cruelty and creates Florida’s very first animal abuser registry, helping to prevent future suffering.
