*Conures are playful and expressive birds with big personalities. In the Conure Education Hub, you’ll find guidance on daily care, cage setup, vocalization habits, and enrichment - all curated to help you understand and bond with your conure.

Chewy editorial team shares 7 fascinating and practical facts about sun conures to help both new and seasoned parrot parents better understand these vibrant, high energy birds.

Known for their striking coloration and even more striking volume, sun conures are not ideal for those sensitive to noise or living in tight quarters like apartments. While not the best talkers, they are incredibly expressive and social, often bonding closely with their human families.

Their playful, affectionate nature means they need lots of interaction and time outside the cage to remain mentally and emotionally healthy.

Without enough stimulation, sun conures may develop undesirable behaviors like excessive screaming or feather plucking.

Providing a variety of bird safe toys - especially those that challenge their intelligence and satisfy their chewing instincts - is essential to keep them happy and occupied.

In addition to their personalities, sun conures come with unique traits and conservation concerns. These birds begin life mostly green, but gradually transform into the radiant mix of yellows, oranges, and reds they’re famous for by age two.

Interestingly, both males and females display the same colorful plumage. Sadly, due to habitat loss and the pet trade, sun conures are now considered endangered in the wild, and little is known about their natural lifespan because of their remote habitats in Brazil and Guyana.

In captivity, however, a well cared for sun conure can live 15 to 30 years. With the right care - including a healthy diet, exercise, and lots of love - sun conures can be incredible companions for those who can meet their needs.
