In a major victory for animals, West Hollywood’s City Council has unanimously voted to prohibit pet stores from selling nearly all live animals, according to local reports. Expanding on its 2010 ban on the retail sale of dogs and cats, the new ordinance now covers amphibians, birds, reptiles, fish, arachnids, hermit crabs, and other mammals not already included. The measure, which takes effect May 1, 2026, includes exceptions for breeders who raise animals on-site, as well as for shelters, humane societies, rescues, and pet stores working with these groups to facilitate adoptions. The Council noted that the current state of retail animal sales conflicts with the city’s vision of being a community dedicated to animal welfare.
West Hollywood has long been a trailblazer in progressive animal protection, with milestones that include declaring itself a “Cruelty Free Zone” in 1989, banning cat declawing in 2004, backing Proposition 2 in 2008, and outlawing fur sales in 2013. By passing this groundbreaking law, the city has once again set a national precedent and strengthened its reputation as one of the country’s most animal-friendly communities. Lady Freethinker commends the City Council for this compassionate decision and urges governments everywhere to follow West Hollywood’s example in advancing protections for animals.
