In a historic ruling, Colombia’s Constitutional Court not only upheld the 2024 ban on bullfighting but also outlawed other blood sports, including cockfighting, Corralejas, and Coleo, marking a significant victory for animal rights. The decision came after a legal challenge from opponents of the ban, who argued that the law violated basic rights such as freedom of expression and culture. However, the Court ruled that these practices conflicted with the nation’s commitment to animal welfare and the protection of animals.
The bullfighting ban will take full effect in July 2027, with tightly regulated events allowed during the transition period. Public funding for such events will be prohibited, and affected workers will be provided with job retraining. Additionally, bullrings will be repurposed into community and cultural spaces within a year. The ban on cockfighting will be phased out by 2028, with the new law also requiring the integration of animal care and protection lessons into school curricula.
