*Declawing is NOT a Harmless Grooming Procedure – it is Permanent and it involves Inhumane and Extremely Painful Amputation of the last bone of a cat’s toe, similar to severing a human finger at the final joint. This Invasive Surgery often causes Lasting Pain, Arthritis, Infections and Inflammations, plus Behavioral Problems, frequently leading to Abandonment and Euthanasia.
**Declawing by ANY Method leaves the cat Walking on Unprotected, Uncushioned Bone On Each Toe! The Bone into which each Claw is Embedded contains Claw Cells and Has to be Amputated or the Claws will Regrow Painfully Crooked. Each Toe Ends in a Stump of Bone which the cat has to Walk On Until They Die.
California has taken a historic step in animal welfare with the signing of Assembly Bill 867, officially banning the cruel and outdated practice of cat declawing statewide.
Spearheaded by Assembly member Alex Lee and supported by advocacy groups such as In Defense of Animals, the Humane Veterinary Medical Alliance, and the Paw Project, this groundbreaking law marks a major victory for animal rights.
Declawing is a permanent surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of the last bone in a cat’s toes - a painful amputation with lasting consequences. This invasive act can lead to a lifetime of medical issues and robs cats of their ability to engage in natural, instinctive behaviors.
AB 867 makes it clear that elective surgical mutilation for human convenience has no place in a compassionate society and ensures that declawing may only be performed when medically necessary.
With this legislation, California becomes the largest state to fully prohibit cat declawing, joining Rhode Island, New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts in prioritizing feline welfare. The law's passage is the result of years of persistent advocacy and grassroots support, including over 3,000 constituent emails to lawmakers and nearly 1,000 to Governor Gavin Newsom urging him to act. It reflects California’s ongoing leadership in humane treatment standards and sets a powerful example for the rest of the nation. AB 867 is a testament to what can be achieved when informed citizens and dedicated organizations unite to demand ethical progress.
*Whiskers, Paws and Love® wholeheartedly supports the statewide ban on cat declawing, standing firmly against this inhumane and painful procedure. Declawing causes irreversible physical and emotional harm to cats and has no place in a society that values compassion and responsible pet care. We believe every cat deserves to live a life free from unnecessary suffering, and this legislation reflects that core value.
This milestone reaffirms our commitment to advocating for the well being of all animals and promoting humane alternatives to outdated practices. We celebrate this victory alongside fellow advocates and thank California for leading the way in protecting our feline companions!
*Every paw deserves to walk without pain, and every cat deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.
